5430 Sports Receives Zero Waste Community Event Award

Boulder, Colorado April 28, 2008 — 5430 Sports was recognized on April 22 at the Boulder County Eco-Cycle Business Awards Luncheon for its highly successful environmental initiative known as “Tri Sustainability.” In receiving the “Zero Waste Community Event Award,” 5430 was specifically recognized “for a strong commitment to Zero Waste planning and education and for successfully recycling and composting an average of 93% of all materials at events.”

Thanks to a working partnership with Eco-Cycle, and supporting partnerships from Inside Triathlon, Alpine Realty, and Acquire Home Loans in 2007, both the Tri Sustainability Initiative at the triathlon series, and 5430’s Zero Waste running races were tremendously successful in reducing their environmental impact.

- The three Boulder triathlon events achieved 93%, 93%, and 92% diversion rates, meaning at each event only 7% of the total waste collected went to the landfill – the highest diversion rates for any Boulder County events in 2007!

- For all events, 4,036 gallons of cardboard was recycled, saving 38 trees

- For all events, 3,350 gallons of comingled containers were recycled, saving 3,870 kW hours of energy

- For all events, 19,649 lbs. of compostable material was collected, creating valuable compost instead of going to waste in the landfill

5430 Sports also worked with Clif Bar and Native Energy to help make the triathlon series carbon neutral, purchasing enough Cool Tags, (renewable energy credits that directly fund Native Energy’s Rosebud St. Francis Wind Farm) to offset each event’s fuel and electricity usage – over 5,000 lbs of carbon emissions. In addition, Clif Bar encouraged event participants to offset their own carbon emissions from travel to the events; enough Cool Tags were purchased to offset over 202,000 lbs of carbon emissions!

According to Barry Siff, Owner of 5430 Sports, “We are committed to building upon the success of our Tri Sustainability program in 2008 by having all of our events’ power generated by either solar or wind power; increasing our focus on carbon emissions; and, by spreading the word and educating our over 7,000 event participants on how they can “Tri Sustainability” at home and in their workplaces.”
